TourneyBubble.com recently had the opportunity to have a (fake) sit-down with the Chairman of the 2009-2010 NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, UCLA Athletic Director Daniel C. Guerrero, to talk about the upcoming tournament.

TourneyBubble:  Thanks for taking the time to talk with us.

Guerrero
: Thanks for having me, guys.

TB
:  It has been a pretty remarkable year for mid-majors in the nonconference schedule.  How will this affect the committee’s decision-making?

Guerrero
: Well, it is going to extremely difficult to completely whore teams like William & Mary, Cornell, and St. Mary’s come March, so we are really going to have to work hard.  The trick is finding suitably crappy BCS teams and inventing some sort of BS difference between their lacking profiles and the mid-majors.  It won’t be easy this year.

TB
: So what will be the BS excuse used to include teams like Maryland and Arizona this year?

Guerrero
:  Since the smaller teams will clearly be ahead in RPI, Win-Loss Percentage, quality wins and road wins, we are thinking about using the average RPI for a team’s losses.  Clearly, if a big time team loses most of its games against good opponents, it’s preferable to a smaller team putting together 25 wins and actually knowing what it takes to win games.

TB
:  So what terribly overrated BCS teams are the committee watching this year?

Guerrero
:  Most of the old favorites.  Maryland has not beaten anybody good all year, so they are certainly an attractive candidate.  Also, Arizona is having their fourth straight down year and losing a lot of games - so they are making a good case as well.  You can also incude Louisville, since they were ranked highly in the preseason and have a marketable name.  Their underwhelming performance thus far has really opened the eyes of the committee.  And don't forget about my UCLA Bruins.  We suck this year and play in a horrible conference, but we are one of the most marketable teams in the country - so don't count us out.

TB
:  What about screwing over non-power BCS teams – will you still be doing that this year?

Guerrero
: Absolutely.  Virginia Tech, Northwestern and Miami are on notice.  Even though there is nothing negative about their resumes thus far, we look forward to nitpicking their credentials as if they came from a low-major conference.  These teams just don’t make the kinds of money that we need.

TB
:  That’s about it as far as questions go – would you like to add anything?

Guerrero
:  The committee is really focused on enraging the people who actually have paid attention to college basketball this year.  While it will be tough to top the outrageously biased selections of the past three years, let me assure you that real college basketball fans will want to throw their couches through the television when my interview with Jim Nantz is over on Selection Sunday.  Thanks for having me!
