A shockingly bad Bracket Busters weekend for the CAA, as Old Dominion and William & Mary's at-large hopes took major hits. Old Dominion will stay in the conversation throughout the rest of the season, but at the very best they will hover on the cut line if they require an at-large. There is no shame for the Monarchs to lose at Northern Iowa, but the missed opportunity to almost wrap up a bid has to sting. They still have a good resume, but its never fun to place your fate in the hands of the selection commitee as a CAA team. Meanwhile, William & Mary lost badly in a no-win game at Iona. A win wouldn't have really helped them, so the loss really damages their fading hopes. The Tribe is pretty much done as an at-large candidate, although it will not hurt win out and see what happens above them - maybe Maryland and Wake Forest will end up as top-15 teams and make their non-conference performance stand out a bit more.
If you'll excuse me, I have to take a day or so to lower my blood pressure after watching Virginia Tech play a little 5 on 8 at Duke. Seth Greenberg's comments that Malcolm Delaney and Jeff Allen would get two fouls "during warmups" could not have been more true. Two pivotal three-point plays in the second half - in which Duke players made layups WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED - broke open a tight game.
